John Randall Nelson

John Nelson lives and works in Tempe and received his Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University. As an illustrator, painter and sculptor, Nelson has seen his mixed media illustrations appear frequently in publications like The New York Times and Rolling Stone. His paintings and sculptures have been featured in numerous solo and group shows including Bentley Projects in Phoenix, Bentley Gallery, Gallery Materia in Scottsdale, the Carter Center at Emory University and the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, N.M. In addition, his work is collected by both public and corporate entities, including Intel and the Perrier Corporation. He has completed commissions for the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States Postal Service and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and has many other public pieces in the Phoenix Metropolitan area.

Shawn Hardegree lives in Tempe and together with his wife Lisa founded LAS Gallery in Phoenix. Shawn holds an MFA in painting from the University of Tennessee and his thesis work has been traveling the east coast for the last year and a half. He has worked for frame shops, galleries and The Knoxville Museum of Art. He provides custom framing , silk-screening for local bands and delivery and installation of art.

Robert Evans lives and works in Tempe, AZ. MFA Candidate-Ceramics- ASU, Former gallery affiliations include Bentley Gallery and Bentley Projects, Gallery Materia, Andorra Gallery, Pascal De Sarthe Fine Art, founding member of 515 Arts, Phoenix.

What is the format of the event?

CONVERGENT will be a showcase of the murals, there will be live music, food, and an auction of the doors on the building which you will be awarded a percentage of the proceeds for the doors purchased that have a relationship with your mural.

How many artists will be selected?

This depends on the # of submissions and the space requirements of the artists selected.

Does the subject of the work matter?

Yes, this show is founded on the idea of seeing the world through the eyes of another, in an effort to strengthen community. We want to understand your hopes and dreams. Take viewers on a journey of your world through the power of the image. We are providing a venue for connecting the independent voices of our community. 1700curry is a family-run business that rents artist, musician, and storage space as it is being transformed into an arts community. This is a space frequented by the public, as such, work of a sexually graphic, or overtly vulgar will not be considered for inclusion in the show.

What kind of artistic proposal can I send?

Photography, Painting, Installation, Sculpture, if you can get it on a wall in the sense of a mural, we will consider it.

Does the organization provide any support with regard to the making of the work?

Top curatorial selections will be given a small materials stipend to be used on materials only. Artists will receive a portion of the proceeds from the auction of the doors at the close of the show. There will be shared housing available for out of state participants, on a request basis. Let us know if you are interested in this at the time of your proposal. We only have a few spaces available.

Where do I make my piece?

You will make your piece at 1700 Curry on the building space provided to you.

How much space do I have?

Proposals should include space requests. Some may wish to have only 20’ while others may want 80’ of wall space. Size requests will be taken into consideration, but we cannot guarantee you will receive the size of wall you request.

What will be access be to the walls?

The artist will have access from 7am to Midnight May 10th - 16th , all work will be finished by Midnight on the 16th of May.

Does the work need to be new?

In general terms we highly recommend new work that has been specifically thought of for our event and concept.

May I enter more than one proposal or art work?

No, but if it is an installation or a series the proposal may consist of more than one element.

Are there any restrictions for proposals or artworks?

There is no limit on the artwork’s size.

What do I have to do to enter? (entry portion of site will be live April 1-17)

What happens if the information is not fully completed?

If the required information is not fully completed, the entrant will not be eligible for participation.

How will I know if I’m among the artists chosen to participate?

www.1700curry.com will post the names of the selected artists on the website by April 15, 2008 and you will be contacted by the organization.


Do I have to relinquish my copyright?

No. The copyright in all the works submitted for the event will remain the property of the artist.

It is a condition of entry that 1700curry and its affiliates will be allowed to post on the web all the participating projects and shall have the irrevocable right of free reproduction of all participating or exhibited proposals for the event, press, publication, postcards, posters and publicity.

How will I know if I'm among the artists chosen to participate?

www.1700curry.com will post the names of the selected artists on the website by April 24, 2008 and you will be contacted by the organization.
